Grinding Is Not the Same as Digging the Stump Out
Grinding takes the stump down below grade with a cutting wheel and leaves the deeper root structure in place to decay naturally. Full extraction pulls the root plate out with machinery, leaves a crater, and costs several times more. For turfing, planting or general use of the space, grinding is what you want. Extraction only makes sense where something is going to be built on that exact spot and the ground has to be genuinely clear.
How Deep, and Why It Matters
A stump cut flush at ground level will sprout, and it will still be there under your mower. Grinding six to twelve inches below grade is enough for turf and general landscaping. If you intend to replant a tree in the same position you want more than that, and you should also expect the soil to be full of wood chips, which tie up nitrogen as they break down. Tell us what the space is for and we will grind to suit it.
Locate Before Anyone Grinds
A grinding wheel does not care what it hits. Irrigation lines, low voltage lighting, gas, water and buried electrical all tend to run exactly where people plant trees. Utilities should be located before the machine arrives, and it is worth telling us about anything you had installed yourself, because private lines will not show on a public locate.
Stump Grinding, Step by Step
Debris handling is part of the job rather than an extra line afterward. Brush goes through the chipper, wood is cut to a size you can move or hauled off entirely, and the drive and lawn get cleared. What is left should look like the work was done, not like the work is still happening.
How We Quote Stump Grinding
Cleanup and haul away are inside the quoted price. Some companies quote the work and then quote separately to take the material away, which is how a cheap estimate stops being cheap. Ask anyone you are comparing us against whether removal of the debris is in their number.
Grinders travel. We bring one out to Leon Valley, Bulverde and San Antonio and anywhere else in Bexar County the machine can physically reach.
Stump Grinding Questions We Get Asked
What happens to the grindings?
They can stay and backfill the hole, which is the usual choice and settles over a few months, or be hauled away and the void topped with soil if you want to turf or plant immediately. Hauling costs a little more. Decide at the estimate rather than on the day.
Can I plant a new tree where the old one was?
Not straight into the grindings. The chips tie up nitrogen as they decompose and the remaining root mass is still in the ground. Either grind deeper and replace the material with soil, or plant a few feet to one side, which is usually the easier answer.
Will the stump grow back?
A ground stump will not, because the cambium is destroyed below grade. A stump merely cut flush very often will, particularly on species that sucker readily, and you then have a cluster of shoots to deal with instead of a stump.
Do you grind stumps you did not remove?
Yes, including old ones. Age makes little difference to the work, though a long dead stump is often softer and quicker. If you have several across the property, price them together in one visit rather than as separate call outs.
